I get that point about building our own pathways/venues to achieve our heart's innermost desires. it's the interplay of "reality" and "dream" that I didnt get. I know the playing field is a metaphor, I just didn't get how a metaphor can be literal at the same time.

I think I have to watch the movie again.

bongBong C. A passion that haunts them for the “what if scenario” in their respective lives.

The young “doc,” (Burt Lancaster) who opted to be a doctor instead of continuing a career in baseball. Who went to the field to pursue his “what if dream,” but after taunting the pitcher (he winked at the pitcher, a deed he wanted to do all his life) he came back to reality to save the life of the little girl (the daughter of Kevin Kostner); that proves he is really destined to be a doctor.

The author who was obsessed to find out and write what really transpired on the payola scandal that rocked the sport during that era. He went to “the beyond the field” to interview the dead players involved in the scandal.

And the leading character (Kevin), who carried a feeling of guilt because of his teenage rebellion against his father (a baseball player), who wanted him to be a baseball player too. He was influenced by the author’s book of freedom and left his father for the life of the “flower generation.” And now on his adult years, longs to tell his father how much he misses and loves him.

The baseball field he built is a playing field where dreams comes true, where the living can interact with the dead to find out what happened to their dreams and passion for the sport.

Any heart would melt at his penultimate dialogue, “Dad would you like to catch ball?” The end of the movie is a sight to behold, father and son playing ball, and one of them is dead.

Without knowing it, he built the baseball field to fulfill his long time dream of playing ball with his dead father… “If you build it he will come.” And to show his love to him… thus, ”ease his pains”…

How nice it would be, if we could find a similar field where we could sit beside our dead father, put our arms around his waist, lay our heads on his shoulder and say “I love you Dad and I am sorry if I hurt you.”

Relating the movie into the aspect of real estate development, I guess these developers feel that people would come if they build something where people could feel and see their dreams and “ease their pains”….Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16958083.post-71479160423203373652007-03-12T18:42:00.000+08:002007-03-12T18:42:00.000+08:00Bong, it’s not “If you build it, they will come;” ...Bong, it’s not “If you build it, they will come;” it's "If you build it, HE will come."domingoaronghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00996543136309944114noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16958083.post-89127402149764091192007-03-12T15:41:00.000+08:002007-03-12T15:41:00.000+08:00dear bong,i'm an avid reader of your columns.
